How to Demonstrate Respect at Work
Respect is a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements. Respect at the workplace refers to treating people with appreciation and dignity. It is one of the most important aspects of the workplace because it creates a healthy work environment for the entire company to accomplish goals together. Everybody who is part of your organization should have a respectful attitude towards others regardless of personal feelings. Both employees and employers are required to treat each other with respect.
Workplace culture differs from one organization to the other. Employers and employees can therefore show respect in different ways. However, here are a few standard ways to show respect at the workplace:
Be an active listener
Always endeavor to be a good listener. Be attentive when colleagues are talking and give them time to share their ideas. Listen to what others have to say before expressing your perspective. This will make them feel seen and heard by you. Be enthusiastic about other people’s ideas.
Pay attention to nonverbal cues
Non-verbal communication such as body language and facial expressions can tell a lot. Ensure that you interact with your co-workers in a respectful manner and show support even without necessarily speaking.
Be honest
Practice transparency always. Your co-workers will feel respected that you value them enough to be transparent with them. This will show that you trust them and want to work with them towards the best outcome.
Recognize and celebrate the strengths and achievements of others
Always clap for others. Do not play blind to your co-workers’ achievements. Acknowledge the good deeds of your teammates and appreciate them. This will show that you respect and value their efforts.
Value the time and workloads of others
Realize that everyone has work to do or is busy. If you set a meeting with anyone, keep time so that you don’t interfere with their schedule. Respect their time and work.
Delegate meaningful work
Don’t let tasks have you in a chokehold. Collaboration is important and your colleagues might be more than willing to help. Delegate some priority tasks to co-workers that are dependable.
Be courteous, polite and kind
Speak to your coworkers politely when asking for help. Thank people for helping and point out their hard work. Courtesy and politeness are small traits that can have a big impact at the workplace.
Be unbiased
Treat everyone without contempt. Do not discriminate against any colleague because of race, religion, gender, or whatever other reason. Do not exclude other team members from a meeting or celebration. Work on creating a good rapport with everyone.
Respect at the workplace will result in increased productivity, collaboration, and employee satisfaction. What other ways can you show respect at the workplace?
