How to be a Stellar Team Player in the Office

A stellar team player simply refers to an outstanding/exemplary teammate. So how do you ensure you are the person your fellow employees would prefer to be teamed up with? How do you kill it at work?

Constantly improve yourself

I like a quote that says, in this life, you are either progressing or regressing, there is nothing like being stagnant. As an employee, always take opportunities to learn and upskill. Continuous learning will set you apart in your industry. Acquire new knowledge, try new approaches, and strive to work smarter. It will help you be the best at what you do and can even earn you a promotion or two at the office. Or even a better job than what you have right now.

Be proactive

Do not sit around waiting to be told what to do. Take initiative, go out, identify problems, and then work to discover solutions.

Form a great relationship with your colleagues

These are people you will be interacting with within your day-to-day. You will be spending more time with them in a day than with your family and friends. It goes without saying that you need to establish a good relationship with them. Good working relationships will make you enjoy your job more. They will also result in a team that is more productive, freeing up time to innovate and focus on your personal development. The professional connections you make will also help you to further your career.

Be reliable/dependable

When you say you're going to do something, do it right every time and deliver before or on the due date. This will set you apart as a trustworthy colleague; one who can be trusted to get the job done. It will make you an invaluable asset on important projects.

Rise above office negativity

It is easy to get mulled in the mad. But learning to navigate your workplace is a vital contributor of succeeding at your job. Try as hard as possible to stay away from toxicity and office politics. Focus on your work and professional development other than such situations at work.

Finish what you start

Imagination is an outstanding quality to have, but it doesn’t do much good without ambition and perseverance. You may present your job with a ton of great ideas and plans, but if you back out of projects or leave them incomplete, you’ll never be a standout employee. Managers love to hear what employees intend to do, and then actually see them go out and complete those tasks.

Being a stellar team player is about setting goals, working a bit extra, getting along with your colleagues, and learning skills that could help you improve at your job.
